“Bo’s Bowel Buster”…
“The Hurt”…
“Blazing Saddles”…
“Kung-Fusion”
These were a few names of the entries in the 11th annual Wellthatscool.com ”Asses of Fire Chili Cookoff”, which was held at Egan’s Bar on February 25th, 2012. The contest saw a total of 18 entries submitted for the consideration of the baddest and best chili in Tuscaloosa.
The event wasn’t just for the 4 judges selected to grade the chili entries, either. Patrons of Egan’s got to pony up $3 and eat samples of all the submissions they could handle. The chili entries ranged from very subtle and calm to incredibly spicy. One submission, “The Hurt”, took home an honorable mention for being the hottest and most intense bowl of chili in the contest. It featured a variety of peppers, including multiple habaneros. Unfortunately, for them anyways, they didn’t finish in the money. Only three chili entries were recognized as winners…
From top to bottom, the winners were:
3rd Place: “Uncle Sean and Aunt Lindsey’s Feel Good Chili” – Sean and Lindsey Hammel
2nd Place: “Da Bombay Chili” – Richard Ahlquist
1st Place: “Beth’s Chili” – Beth Ryba
1st and 2nd place took home a cash prize, while 3rd place took home a case of beer. Even if they didn’t win, the general consensus from the crowd of participants was a positive one. All of the chili entries had their supporters and fans, thus making for a very successful and filling afternoon. If you didn’t participate or attend this year, start getting ready for the 12th edition of this event next year.
