From the vault :Black Willis Live at Egans

Posted by chinesedentist On April - 26 - 2012

On Friday April 27th Egans will get a visit from Black Willis and The Golden Monica

If there is a band that is synonymous with late smokey whiskey tinged nights it’s the Black Willis band. Adam and Blake Williamson have been providers of soundtrack to dive bars and hell raising since the early 2000′s . The band has gone through several changes over the years and this model is comprised of Adam Williamson (Guitar, vocals), Blake Williamson (Drums), Little Bo Gibson (Guitar) and Justin Colburn (bass). If there is one thing we love about this band ( well besides for their undying love of The Crimson Tide) it’s there love of playing it’s like they do if for them and we get voyeuristicly watch. So if your ever feel like your hell raising is getting a little low, we know a cure and it is the Black Willis band.

Tuscaloosa Abides: 4/7/12

Posted by DSmithImages On April - 9 - 2012

Say what you want about the tenants of Wellthatscool.com, but at least it’s an ethos… and that ethos was on hand on April 7th at the Bama Theatre in Tuscaloosa for “Tuscaloosa Abides: A Celebration of All Things Lebowski”.  The now annual event is not only a showing of the Cohen Brothers’ classic, The Big Lebowski, but an overall celebration of the quirky world that film created.

The night included Wii Bowling for those wanting to replicate the favorite hobby of The Dude, Walter, and Donny and specials on Caucasians, or White Russians if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.  The highlight before the actual showing of the film was a costume contest held by The Pink Box Burlesque’s own Mama Dixie, which tied the night together nicely…

If you don’t have Nihilists chasing you and you don’t have to chase down little Larry on suspicion of stealing your “briefcase”, take a look at the full gallery of photos at http://www.dsmithimages.com/site/events/tuscaloosa-abides-4-7-12/1/.

Enjoy!

Pink Box Burlesque Presents Rocky Horror Picture Show

Posted by chinesedentist On October - 28 - 2011

One of our favorite times of the year is Halloween. Who doesn’t like getting tipsy while dressing as their favorite video game charter or internet meme?  (why yes Matt Smith I do think those tights would really pull your Link costume together)  But we also love that it’s the time of year that we get to partner with the lovely ladies and handsome gentlemen of the PBB for The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

This year’s show is on Sat Oct 29th at the lovely Bama Theatre at 9pm. It’s not just a screening of the movie,oh no, it’s a full on stage show with  crowd participation, props,  dancing and a heaping tablespoon of innuendo with the movie as a backdrop. It would be a terrible shame to get there late. Starting at 7pm when the doors open you can watch “Haxan”, a creepy 1922 Swedish documentary about witchcraft followed by the always super rad costume contest with over $300 in prizes at 8:30. Admission is just $15 with prop bags for $5 and that is money well spent in our book. We hope to see you there!!

The Alabama Shakes Live at Egans for Bo’s birthday

Posted by chinesedentist On October - 19 - 2011

For those lucky enough to get in on Friday Oct 14th, you got to see a band that will no longer be playing small venues. You might have even got in but could not see the band. It was the fullest Egan’s has ever been. Well, do we have a treat for you. With Mikey on the injured reserve, our own Erin Phillips fought the throbbing masses to record a few songs that are not on their wildly popular EP . The sound is not perfect but it really captures the energy of a packed out live Alabama Shakes show. These guys, much like the Dexateens, make us proud to be from Alabama.

The Suds of the South Beerfest has returned to Tuscaloosa!

When people think of craft beer, they often think of the Pacific Northwest, Colorado or even Delaware. One place that does not get the respect it deserves is the South. That’s why wellthatscool.com is proud to present the “Suds of The South”. This event will take place at Wilhagans in Tuscaloosa on Saturday March 12th from 4 to 7 pm. The featured breweries include Good People Brewing (Birmingham, AL), Straight to Ale (Huntsville, AL), Back Forty Beer Co. (Gadsden, AL), Terrapin Beer Co. (Athens, GA), Sweetwater Brewing Co. (Atlanta, Ga), Yazoo Brewing Co. (Nashville, TN), Highland Brewing Co. (Asheville, NC), Lazy Magnolia Brewing Co. (Kiln, MS) and Abita Beer (Abita Springs LA). This year we are pleased to announce a rotating, non-southern addition every year which we will call the “sympathizer”. This year’s “sympathizer” will be Bell’s Brewery (Galesburg MI). Each attendee will receive a 3oz keepsake glass and get to move around and try beer from all the breweries. Good People and Back Forty are planning on bring special, exclusive beers for the event. This event is a fundraiser for Free the Hops. So by attending, you not only get to try great beers but you also get to help the fight of changing Alabama’s antiquated beer laws. A limited number of early buyer tickets are on sale for $10 and $15. After those are sold out, the price will increase to $20. Get your tickets here https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/157529

The Oxford American gets its Alabama on

Posted by chinesedentist On January - 7 - 2011

One of our favorite magazine here at Well That’s Cool headquarters is The Oxford American. It spotlights art and photography and has published exceptional works by William Eggleston, Carroll Cloar, Thornton Dial, Sr., Lara Tomlin, Wayne White, Robert Gwathmey, Glennray Tutor, and many others. As life long southerners we are proud to have it highlight the fact that being from the south is nothing to be embarrassed about. In fact, it’s a point of pride. Even those uppity yanks at the New York Times had this to say, “The Oxford American may be the liveliest literary magazine in America”.  The Oxford American has received wide acclaim for its annual Southern Music Issue, which includes a CD of songs highlighting a variety of genres and eras. It has showcased both famous and criminally neglected musicians. This year’s CD is all about musicians from Alabama. You can also head over to www.oxfordamerican.org to read even more and check a top 15 list of contemporary Alabama musicians. We think if you’re from around here you might recognize the number one band. We could ramble all day but to get the real skinny, we’ll pass on the press release: Read the rest of this entry »
