Yes, it is often that this column goes from frustrated to joyous over the Tuscaloosa music scene, sometimes within the same post.

<img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-3424" alt="Tuscaloosa Monorail airs every other Tuesday on Comcast 21 in Tuscaloosa and subsequently on their YouTube channel.
Tuscaloosa Monorail airs every other Tuesday on Comcast 21 in Tuscaloosa and subsequently on their YouTube channel.

Last week, I expressed a little disappointment in some support that could’ve been shown for the music and arts that we have, but I still believe that overall the Tuscaloosa music scene is a fine, growing, wonderful thing. It ebbs and flows, but it somehow, almost paradoxically, it maintains consistent and great music and artists.

Proof that Tuscaloosa has another reason to shout for joy? Tuscaloosa Monorail. Click on their Facebook link and just see what they are all about. It’s a incredibly cool thing for the community; plus, it seems like has been a long time coming.

Long ignored by PBS’ We Have Signal (with only one exception), Tuscaloosa finally does it right by showcasing its own talent. The talent is here in boon, whether others around the state want to notice it or not. Now, with Tuscaloosa Monorail, we have a place to put it on the air.

The summary is this: every other Tuesday, Tuscaloosa Monorail airs on Comcast 21 in Tuscaloosa where they feature a live performance from a Tuscaloosa band or artist with short interview segments dispersed throughout. Good news for those who don’t have Comcast, too: they also post a replay of every episode on their YouTube channel, which also helps for going back and watching older episodes (and their wonderful pilot). Tuscaloosa Monorail is filmed live at Green Bar, a hub for local, original music throughout the weekends.

The show is irreverent and cheery, made so with host Zach Travis, long known from his early days on the music scene from being a part of The Concourse/Swayze’s, one of Tuscaloosa’s few attempts at an all-ages venue. Tuscaloosa Monorail also features an old-school, eighties aesthetic vibe with a vintage look and feel from their classic, analog camera set up and by their amazing crew, featuring producers Robin Rains and Frank Thagard.

Host Zach Travis hosts Tuscaloosa Monorail from the Green Bar.

Travis hosts the show with a light air, starting each episode with a funny segment before introducing each band. The questions with the bands in between song performances are fun, brought to life by Travis’ disposition and happiness.

So far, Tuscaloosa Monorail has featured local guitar hero Ham Bagby & the Siege and punk/funk Red Light District Attorney. The pilot episode included the eclectic rock ensemble Electric Moon, and an upcoming episode will have blues/garage rock Looksy. Those three acts alone show Tuscaloosa’s diverse, interesting, and talented pool of artists. A lot more are to come. I certainly have a wish list of bands and artists that I’m itching to see on there. The good news is that Tuscaloosa’s wealth of talent isn’t going anywhere, so the show can run for a long, long time before it even starts to repeat.

In fact, Tuscaloosa Monorail is my new favorite thing. It would be a shame for the producers and crew to lose steam due to a lack of support. Go to their Facebook and YouTube page and support this endeavor. The city will get what it deserves, so it’s time that Tuscaloosa step up: watch the show, and support these types of cool things. And this time, you can explore the bands without even having to leave your home.

Signed,

Paste recently released the top 12 bands that you should be listening to. No Tuscaloosa bands were included.

Recently Paste released their list of the bands and artists to be listening to now from Alabama. It’s a part of a series that they are doing on the best bands in each state. It’s a great idea. I’m a sucker for lists, so I was completely on board. I read and listened to them all.

I would be extremely hard pressed to argue against their list, too. As their cut-off point seems to be around ten or twelve for each state, they got close to nailing it for the Yellowhammer State. The inclusion of Nell Robinson, who doesn’t even live in Alabama (only was from here), and Fire Mountain, whom I’ve never heard of, are the only questionable inclusions from my point of view. In fact, many of those artists made my very own best bands of Alabama list at the end of last year.

But this is where I’d need to point out that the list is was gathered by reader submissions. That’s right: Paste didn’t have a lot of homework to do, really, other than to probably pick amongst those who got the most votes.

Therefore, I should be saying that Paste’s readers got it pretty right. Kudos to those who have time to submit to such. You did right by me.

However, there are a few bands that were completely left out that had me scratching my head, and I’m still baffled. Where the hell were the Alabama Shakes? Okay, they’re popular enough, and Paste was probably looking for up-and-coming bands. Fine.

What about Phosphorescent? If we’re counting bands and artists that were simply born in Alabama, both Phosphorescent and the Drive-by Truckers should be on the list, right? Well, you have to cut off some or else end up with a huge list. And some of them were mentioned briefly in the introduction to the list. And again, those two are probably just a bit too big to be included.

I think that Baak Gwai, Underhill Family Orchestra, Model Citizen, and Callooh! Callay! should’ve been considered, but maybe those are personal biases, due to my love for those bands. So, I’ll leave those out; I get it.

Which brings me to the perhaps the two biggest exclusions: The Dexateens and The Bear. I have no idea how those two did not make the list. And, yes, I definitely thought to submit them. How could they not have made others’ lists as well? I’m a little amazed. Okay, The ‘Teens were listed in the introduction. Maybe they, too, were a little to big for the list? That’d be odd, but I’m trying to justify. But, The Bear? Someone’s not listening, because if they were, they’d be floored by that band.

And my final rant: there were absolutely zero bands from Tuscaloosa on the list. And since this was a reader-submitted list, this means that Tuscaloosa fans and folks were sitting on their hands for this one. With all the excellent bands in town, it’s high time that Tuscaloosa stop being the little brother of music in the state. A lot of that is up to us — we people of the city.

Sometimes, no one knows how great your place is unless you toot your own horn.

The Motions were the band that used to strip down to their underwear, used to be underage in Egan’s, used to be a three and four-piece band. The Motions aren’t around any more, and in their place stands Hartle Road. Hartle Road look a lot like The Motions; in fact, they actually are The Motions, just a little older, wiser. Oh, and the name’s changed. The band once known as The Motions are becoming a memory as Hartle Road are now proving that their sound as well as their ages have matured.

I recently sat down with Toby Hartleroad, lead singer and primary songwriter for Hartle Road in the first of The Wellington Interviews, an in-depth look with a member of a local or regional band. Here, Hartleroad shares some secrets and opens up about his band, his taste for culture and literature, the headaches of booking shows, and even fatherhood.

You guys started as The Motions. I know that there was some legal issues a few years ago from another band also called The Motions. How much of the name change to Hartle Road came from those issues?
Yeah, the Motions started around the tail end of 2008 and continued up until around a year ago. The legal issues that arose were very, very real, but having said that, I don’t believe that it pushed us to change the name any sooner than we would have otherwise. We’re a different band now, and the Motions was always a temporary thing to us anyways.

<img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-3394" alt="Toby Hartleroad, front man for Hartle Road.
Toby Hartleroad, front man for Hartle Road.

Why did you go with your last name for the new band title?
We’re huge Van Halen fans. Seriously, I get asked all the time. I don’t know? It’s just a name. What decides a great band name? Anything we came up with was taken, so we just figured, “Well, Max and I’s last name is pretty original, let’s roll with that.” Max is constantly making me reassure him that people don’t get the idea that it’s all about Max and I. I suppose it would seem that way to an extent, but really, it’s a name that happens to be our last name.

You all are from Columbus, Mississippi, but didn’t you move recently?
Yes, we are in fact from Columbus. We made the move to Water Valley, MS in January.

Why the move?
[It]was made because we’d been recording at Dial Back Sound in Water Valley and the more time we spent in the town we just grew to love it. It’s a real cool town. It’s close to Oxford, it’s got a real kick-ass local grocery store/restaurant called the BTC, as well as having some good folks in the area. However, I am sad to say, that we will all be moving back to Columbus pretty soon.My girlfriend and I are excited to be expecting our first child together, and think it’s a smart move to be around the family for a bit. We have talked about her going to grad school at Ole Miss, so hopefully we’ll be able to move back up to Water Valley in the next year or so. Just want to get through the initial infant stage being close to family and what not.

Your newest release was a single with the two songs “Sainte Marie” and “Pe-Paw.” Are these two songs about your grandparents? Why go the route of singing about your grandparents or the places where they lived?
“Pe-Paw” is most certainly about my grandfather, however, it’s not the one most people associate us with. My grandparents on my dad’s side are truck drivers, so Max and I were always fascinated how they’d just head out on the road for two months, then come back and act normal. It was just weird trying to comprehend that as a kid, you know? So I figured I’d write about it. “Sainte Marie,” on the other hand, really isn’t about my grandparents. Yes, my great grandmother’s name was Thelma, and she lived in the town of Sainte Marie, IL, but, I used it more for its spiritual meaning than anything. Her name always stuck out to me, and similarly the town stuck out as well. Maybe the chorus is mentions her, but the verses really don’t have anything to do with that.

Your grandfather has been a staple at all of your shows. Where does he find the energy to work full time and be a part of your music? Does he still attend shows like he used to do when you all were underage?
You know, I ask myself this all the time as well. The boys and I call him the hardest working guy in show business. It’s wild. He’s worked 8 to 5 for as long as I’ve known him, and yet still, he’d be out with us at a Bin Rockin party in Tuscaloosa at 3 in the morning hanging with the best of them. He tells me you’re only as young as you feel, maybe that has something to do with him. He does still attend shows, not as frequently as he used to, but if we play close to home, he’ll come out. I kinda started taking over the driving duties, as I felt lame making him drive our lazy asses home at 4 in the morning, and it just naturally progressed to us being a bit more independent. He’s the wisest and most dedicated man I’ve met. And he’s fucking rock’n’roll.

There are nods to the Beatles and the Beach Boys in “Sainte Marie” from the piano riff to the background speaking, a la John Lennon, to the bridge where you sing, “Don’t you love me.” What would you say to those people who say that you guys are just ripping off something that’s already been done and not finding your own sound?
There is a pretty good Jim Jarmusch quote where he says nothing is original. Steal what speaks to you. Then he says authenticity is what matters. We have stuff that sounds nothing like the Beatles and stuff that sounds very similar. Who cares? It’s music. We like Springsteen. Springsteen liked Phil Spector. Phil Spector liked Ben E. King. This is not something new. If someone wants to come and tell us we are ripping someone off, tell it to our face.

Both “Sainte Marie” and “Pe-Paw” are both very dense and layered. What made you go to that sound from where you started as a three-piece rock ensemble?
“Sainte Marie” called for dense and layered production. It wouldn’t be as interesting without that. Do I think that is bad? Not at all. Songs are meant to served. Different songs call for different thing. That is the first thing you learn when making a record. Don’t try to make a song something it’s not. “Anarchy In The U.K.” didn’t need a string section, but “A Day In The Life” did. The B-side to our single, “Pe-Paw”, didn’t need any of that. Everything outside of the vocals and the organ was cut live on the floor at the same time. I think we were definitely trying to go more for raw emotion on “Pe-Paw”, so the lack of overdubs on that one allows for that to happen. Everything, for the most part, has a place in music. Lets open our minds and step outside the box to show people that. We’ve got songs that are way more dense than anything we’ve put out, and we’ve got the most sparse things we have ever written.

You guys played so much in Tuscaloosa, it was almost like a second home. Where does Tuscaloosa rank to you now? Is it still a second home? Or has it moved down the list now that you all are closer to Oxford?
We still really enjoy playing in Tuscaloosa and seeing some faces we recognize. We used to play a lot more, but we’ve learned to cut back a little bit, and try to make the shows a little bit more special. Every single time we play Egan’s, I say, “It feels good to be home.” And it does feel like home. It was the first place in the world to ever embrace us, so naturally it will always hold a special place in our hearts. In a way, now we’re a band without a hometown, so I don’t suppose there is a list for it to move down on.

Since Tuscaloosa is the main focal points of the column, I’ll ask this: do you have a favorite Tuscaloosa band?
Yes. Most definitely Hooper. “The World’s Greatest Stunt Band.” Really dig their songs, “Mr. Reynolds” and “Death Of A Stuntman”. We’re always jamming to that in the car on the way to shows and stuff.

If you were to pick a line-up for a great Tuscaloosa show, what four bands would you put on the bill?
Spaceman Bill & The Groovy Gravy, Conspiracy A-Go-Go, Sweat Bee, and American Cosmic. Then as the secret guest, The Brooms walk onstage to play “The Dixie’s Done.”

Hartle Road played The Nick recently

Who are your favorite Tuscaloosa bands to play shows with?
Man, there’s been a lot. We’ve always had a blast playing with Baak Gwai. We’ve gotten into quite a bit of trouble with those cats. I hate to say it, but we’ve kind of been out of the loop with the local scene in Tuscaloosa the past couple of years. I know Sparrow & The Ghost have been doing some shows lately. We used to enjoy playing with them. Blaine Duncan and Callooh! Callay! seem to be a little more active now, and we’ve had some good and weird times with them as well.

Is there a local or regional band that you simply think people should be paying more attention to?
For sure. Water Liars have a great new record out. Dug that last Dead Fingers record. Just played some shows with Tess Brunet and really enjoy her stuff. That last Model Citizen single, “Evil Wing”, kicks all kinda of ass. Ben Shea from Dark Knights Of Camelot has a new project right now called Stiff Milk that’s real cool. Jim Mize. John Paul Keith. The Pollies. Lee Bains put on a show in Oxford the other day that blew us away. The South has a real cool thing going right now. And it’s very eclectic, so there’s no reason someone can’t find something to enjoy.

Back to Sainte Marie” and “Peepaw.” Are you releasing this single as a physical copy? If so, what format?
We actually just released a 7” of the single this past month. We intentionally crafted a single, with a definite A-side and B-side, so we always planned on putting a 45 out.

Are these two songs teasers for a longer release? If so, when will those songs be release and what format?
We haven’t quite figured out exactly how we will release the rest of the material. It’s definitely a teaser for a longer release, but it might be released in the form of vinyl singles every couple of months or so. We’re currently trying to figure out which two songs we want to put on the next 7”. It’ll definitely come sooner rather than later. We recorded a good deal of songs to be listened to as an entire album, but we’re real enamoured with the simplicity that a single presents. You know? You have like 4 minutes to a side to be great. It makes you really think hard on what exactly you want in the songs. With “Sainte Marie”, we really honed in on the song itself, but we were still able to fit a bunch of different sections into that. The album kinda takes that a step further. We reference the same characters throughout the record. Patton kinda pushed for “Sainte Marie” to be the 1st single, because he said it kinda sums up the record in 3 minutes. I like that idea. Even releasing the songs in singles, it gives the listener a lot more power in how they want to interpret the record on the whole. If we release 5 singles with 10 songs, the listener can be like, “Well, I think this song should open the album, and this song should close the album.” While the next listener could have a total different tracklist. We definitely tried to tell a story on this record, but it’s up to the listener to decide how that story runs its course. Hopefully there are some music geeks like us in the world who would appreciate that sort of thing.

Matt Patton produced a lot of your recent recordings. What was it like working with Matt?
Working with Matt was like working with your neighborhood best friend. It just so happens you were born 15 years apart. I respect Matt for what we have done together. I don’t have any idol worship because that won’t help you when the tape starts rolling. His talent from any other groups wouldn’t have meant anything had we not worked out well in the studio. I think he is one of the most talented musicians I’ve met because of what I’ve seen him do. He is so much more than people think. He comes in and helps us follow what we want while putting his stamp on it.

What has been the hardest part of continuing to do music as long as you guys have?
I really don’t know. We want to do this as a career. We don’t want to play just on weekends, or do short little runs every now and then. We’ve made sacrifices. Since we all got jobs it got a little more difficult with practicing and getting off for weekday shows, but we’ve made it work, and hopefully one day we won’t need those jobs anymore. We’re musicians who work other jobs for quick cash. I hate it for us sometimes, because working without any degrees and minimal experience sucks, but it’s part of it, and we’re all grateful that we’re able to do anything. Being around for 5 years or so, we’ve seen a lot of bands come and go, come back, then go again, so it’s kinda been weird keeping up relationships with people. Some people just give up. Some people are just happy playing shows in their hometown. Some people do 20 shows a year and call it a busy year. We don’t want that. We want to be on the road all the time. We want to miss our families. You know, a few months ago we played Nashville at the Basement on a Tuesday night. It was freaking packed. We left town about 1 a.m. and stopped in Huntsville, AL and stayed in the car in a rest area. The next night played the Nick in Birmingham to roughly 10 people. It was awesome…We’re out to prove something, and we won’t stop until we do.

An artist’s rendering of Hartle Road as they play live.

Who in the band is weirdest to hang out with?
We’re all a bunch of damn weirdos. So the weirdest? I guess Miles. You get Miles on a strange night and you’ll never fucking forget it. Then the next night he won’t say a damn word to you. Both Miles and Max are real hard to win over, so if you can earn their respect, you can probably do just about anything.

Who has the weirdest musical influences?
I love Face Value by Phil Collins. Max loves Love You by the Beach Boys. Miles loves Trans by Neil Young. Tyler Carter loves Glitter by Gary Glitter. We’re all fucking weird.

Who would you say is the most talented in the band?
I’ll tell you this, I’m the luckiest guy in the world, and most certainly the one with the least amount of talent in the band. Bringing Tyler into the band really took us to a new level and led us into our current direction. He’s so damn good. Max, Max is the man. 19 years old, yet so insanely tight on the drums it’s crazy. He’s tasteful in a way you just don’t hear that often anymore. And Miles, not only a really inventive bass player, but also a fucking monster on the organ. So much so that he’s even been doing session work up in Water Valley. If you need a keys player, give him a holler. I know I’m gushing, but I’m thrilled to get to work with these three guys on a daily basis.

Your band consists of a lot of family members. Do you ever get tired of one another? What do you do to keep from fighting over decisions, especially in song arrangement? Who has the final say?
Max and I definitely argue like brothers, but thankfully it’s normally about petty things. Miles usually steps in and tells us we’re both being dumbasses until we step back in line. Amazingly, we haven’t gotten tired of each other yet. Yes, 3 of us are family, but we’re also best friends and we stick by one another. With arrangements, normally Max and Miles kinda push things along. They’ll encourage me to write more, or change a chord here and there, and nine times outta ten, they’re spot on. I would say if anyone has the final say, it would definitely be Max. He’s got a good head on his shoulders, and he’s one hell of a writing partner, but he’s also able to detach himself personally from the songs, and see them in more of an objective light. I think every band needs that person.

What’s been the biggest issue that you’ve faced when making music, playing shows, or being with other bands?
Being underage certainly tops the list. I mean, I figure it’s hard for any band to book shows nowadays. How do y’all do it?!?! So imagine now only one member is over 21. We have to work twice as hard to earn people’s respect and not come off as petty little kids playing music.

What’s been the best thing that has ever been said or written about your music?
You know, we were tickled pink when you said “Sainte Marie” was a blatant eulogy to the Beatles. Either that, or the other day we were playing some shitty bar in Memphis and some guy said, “You guys are fucking lame.”

What has been the worst thing that has been said or written?
The time some guy said we were a cover band that sounded like the Gin Blossoms. Ouch.

Lastly, let’s get into some culture and how it affects your writing. If you could only watch one movie and one television series for the rest of your life, what movie and series are you picking?
Now I love this shit. TV series would almost certainly be “The Wonder Years.” When that show hit Netflix a few years ago, it changed my life. I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much. Movie is a tough one. Today, it would be Two-Lane Blacktop. Wait, Synecdoche, New York. No, we’ll go with Two-Lane Blacktop.

What’s your favorite novel of all time? Do you consider yourself an avid reader?
I used to read a whole lot more than I do now, sadly. I still actively try to read a little bit though. I’ve been heavy into books dealing with some form of the American Dream the last couple of years, so Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Great Gatsby, Middlesex, and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay are some of my favorites currently.

Who’s the greatest musician in the world that is still alive?
Tony Clifton
