Wellthatscool.com bowling league and meeting

Posted by chinesedentist On May - 9 - 2012

That’s right everyone it is time for a new league to start. The league will start this Wednesday May 16th. However we will be having a meeting at 8pm tonight at Wilhagans for $2 pint night were we will go over rules and answer any questions anyone has so why not come out and see us and let us tell you how awesome the league. A quick hint it’s real freaking awesome. This will be our 16thish or so league. Its hard to really remember when the sport practically demands that you drink large amounts of beer. The league works like this;

  • You and two friends come out to the AMF bowling ally on Wednesday nights at 8pm. Come a little early this first week to fill out paper work.
  • If you don’t have two other people to help you form your very on three headed monster pure
bowling awesomeness come out anyway there are always a few people looking to join a team.
  • You each bring $12, this covers the cost of the games, shoe rental and league scoring
  • You get assigned a handicap to make it fair when bowling against better bowlers.
  • How does this handicap work? Well I’m glad you asked, It is 100% of 200. I know you thought there would be no math but bear with us, all it means is that if you average 100 pins you’ll get 100 pins added to your score. So lets say you average 120 pins well you get 80 pins, 150 you 50 added and so on. So what ever you average under 200 will be added to your score.
  • At the end of 12 weeks there are cash prizes as well as well as a big pot luck and free bowling. We also have it on good authority that there will be a special prize for each team this league. Hint it rhymes rolling fall.

We like to look at the league as sort of a midweek weekend. Something to help on Monday because shit it’s only two days till bowling and after bowing it’s almost the weekend. It’s also a great way to kick it with your friends and play one of the few sports that encourage drinking. If you have any questions please drop us a line at wellthatscool(at)gmail(dot)com. We hope to see you there.

National Championship Celebration: 1/09/12

Posted by DSmithImages On January - 10 - 2012

Keith Jackson used to say, “They’re dancing in Eastaboga!” when describing the celebration for a big win by The University of Alabama Crimson Tide.  They very well could have been dancing in Eastaboga last night after Alabama’s dominating win over L.S.U., but I know for a fact they were dancing in the streets of Tuscaloosa as well.  Fans quickly spilled onto University Boulevard between Egans and The Houndstooth after the clock struck zero, and the celebration of Alabama’s 14th National Championship began.

I was lucky enough to be out there during the celebration after the win against Texas, and I was lucky enough to be out there last night.  What made the celebration last night a bit better is that it wasn’t 10 degrees outside like it was two years ago during the Texas celebration.  I nearly went to New Orleans to be in there for the championship atmosphere, but when those plans fell through… I knew I didn’t want to be any other place than Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  I really do love this city, and nights like this one make it extra special.

Enjoy and Roll Tide!

Rivals United Flag Football Game: 08/13/11

Posted by DSmithImages On August - 14 - 2011

(Note – this blog post will also be appearing at http://blog.dsmithimages.com/2011/08/14/rivals-united-alabama-vs-auburn-alumni-flag-football-game-081311/)

By now, we are all aware of the devastation left by the tornadoes that struck Alabama on April 27th. We are also aware of the immediate outpouring of support and help shown by people not only in this state but throughout the country. An interesting side point to this outpouring was when the incredibly heated Alabama and Auburn rivalry took a back seat as the two fan bases came together to help out across Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. The rivalry had, unfortunately, taken a bad turn in the months leading up to the storm as the bulk of level headed fans on both sides had to deal with the Harvey Updyke nonsense along with a seemingly endless stream of venom spewed on talk radio and message boards.

On Saturday August 13th, former players from both Alabama and Auburn came together at Spain Park High School in Hoover to put on a charity flag football game to benefit tornado relief across the state. The heated rivalry between the two teams took a back seat again as both fan bases got a chance to see the old timers have a little fun on the field and represent their schools once more.

With Governor Robert Bentley flipping the coin and other dignitaries surrounding the sideline, the event turned out to be a pleasant success for those in attendance. Some players had definitely lost a step or ten, while others looked incredibly sharp. I was on hand to photograph it for Wellthatscool.com so there was a definite focus on the Alabama side of things since, after all, Tuscaloosa is home.

The game itself was a back and forth encounter, but the ending saw Alabama prevail. Andrew Zow threw the game winning touchdown pass and two point conversion to secure the 42-41 victory. Former Alabama great Siran Stacy was named the M.V.P. of the game, but honestly, everyone that participated should be commended and thanked. The media on hand should also be commended for making it a point to celebrate the atmosphere at the game, while condemning the few idiots on both sides who try to ruin this rivalry for everyone. Is the Alabama/Auburn rivalry heated? Absolutely. It always will be. Does that mean either side has to resort to desperate measures to get ahead? Not at all. Settle it on the field and be done with it.

After the game, a colleague got to interview former Alabama great Wesley Britt for a few moments. Wesley and his family were in the direct path of the storm, and thankfully, they made it through unscathed. Hearing him recount that and life in general after playing in the NFL for a few years definitely put things in perspective.

If you want to check out the full gallery of photos from this event, you can do so by visiting http://www.dsmithimages.com/site/events/rivals-unite-for-recovery-8-13-11/1/

Please continue to remember and support the people impacted by the events of April 27th. Recovery isn’t just limited to rebuilding structures. Remember those that will forever be changed by what happened.

Well That’s Cool Bowling League

Posted by chinesedentist On May - 16 - 2011

As many of you know there are a few things that we are really into. The first of course is beer, sweet delicious nectar of the gods beer. The second however is sports, we like to think of ourselves as the thinking mans hooligan. So why not do something that brings both of our passions together bowling. The way it works is that you form a three person team, bring $12 a person (and your game face) and get ready for what we call the midweek weekend. The $12 covers shoes three games, score keeping and the cash prizes at the end of the 12 week season. You will receive a handicap based on your average that really makes it fair no matter what your skill level is. What better way to spend a Wednesday evening then by hanging out  a bunch of friendly cool people bowling. If you have any questions feel free to call Bo @ 205-886-8140 or email us at wellthatscool(at)gmail. Hope to see you there!! This Wed. May. 18th is the first night of bowling and registration. Normally the bowling starts at 8pm but this week getting there early around 7:30pm would be good to fill out the forms.

10th annual Asses of Fire Chili Cookoff

Posted by chinesedentist On February - 8 - 2011

Every year around this time, we here at the well that’s cool headquarters get the hankering for the savory bean, meat and spice concoction known as chili. So how do we fulfill the gastronomic self flagellation of ingesting as many batches of chili as we can while drinking beer? The “10th Annual Asses of Fire Chili Cookoff” at Egans of course. So if you got some mad chili skills and want to show them off to Tuscaloosa, come to Egans on Saturday Feb. 19th. Registration is from 2:00pm to 3:45pm with judging by panel starting at 4:15pm. You’ll need to bring a crock pot, your own ladle and $3 to enter. We will award the top two chilis with cash prizes with third place taking home a case of beer. It gets even better. If you take the time to make a chili, you shall be rewarded with $1.50 Shetland (8oz) as well as $2.50 full pints of any of Egans drafts. If you wish to partake in the adventure but don’t want to make a chili,  you may dine on the smorgasboard of chilis for a mere 3$.  Is there a better way to spend a non-football Saturday in Tuscaloosa than hanging out with cool people, drinking beer and eating chili? We dare say no. Hope to see you there!
