Dexateens live from the “Tuscaloosa Get Up”

Posted by chinesedentist On May - 7 - 2012

As many know, we at wellthatscool.com organized a concert called the “Tuscaloosa Get Up”. The show featured the Alabama Shakes, the Dexateens and Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires at the Bama Theatre here in Tuscaloosa on Friday March 23rd. The event raised over $26,000 towards building a house for Tuscaloosa Habitat for Humanity. We were lucky enough to have a great board mix from David H. Jones as well as a live mic mix from Matt at patchndent.com (great source for live music from the south) mixed by Shane Lollar at Old Capital studio. We were also very lucky to have Henry Busby and Marcus Tortorici there to record the night. What you see below is a mix of all of the above edited by Henry and Marcus. The Dexateens have been one of our favorite bands for years always on the brink. This show was no different, Matt Patton was stuck in Vancouver, BC, Canada on the morning of the show and yet found his way there. It was one of the most amazing  shows we have ever seen.

From the vault :Black Willis Live at Egans

Posted by chinesedentist On April - 26 - 2012

On Friday April 27th Egans will get a visit from Black Willis and The Golden Monica

If there is a band that is synonymous with late smokey whiskey tinged nights it’s the Black Willis band. Adam and Blake Williamson have been providers of soundtrack to dive bars and hell raising since the early 2000′s . The band has gone through several changes over the years and this model is comprised of Adam Williamson (Guitar, vocals), Blake Williamson (Drums), Little Bo Gibson (Guitar) and Justin Colburn (bass). If there is one thing we love about this band ( well besides for their undying love of The Crimson Tide) it’s there love of playing it’s like they do if for them and we get voyeuristicly watch. So if your ever feel like your hell raising is getting a little low, we know a cure and it is the Black Willis band.

Tuscaloosa Get Up House and belated thanks

Posted by chinesedentist On April - 11 - 2012

As many know, the Wellthatscool.com Tuscaloosa Get Up concert was a major success. We raised around $20,000 to help the Nero family put their lives back together. In the rush to get everything lined up and running smoothly, we inadvertently forgot to thank some of the people that helped make the event so awesome:

The Guitar Gallery donated the guitar for the silent auction and help sell tickets for us. Dan and Scott have both been great help to us at WTC as well as many great causes. Make sure that if you need anything to do with stringed instruments, you stop by and see them. They are a great local company and everyone of them is super awesome.

The University of Alabama’s Creative Campus partnered with us to provide the after party for the Get Up. They sold bracelets to the Druid City Arts Fest bar crawl and are donating $5000 to the Nero’s home. We mentioned it but not quite enough, Alexis, Ryan and the whole Creative Campus team we can’t thank you enough.

The Jupiter on the Strip got in touch with us late when we were out of  sponsorship spots . Undeterred, Jeremiah Jones (owner of Jupiter) insisted on making a very generous donation to the cause and not caring if he got mentioned or not. He believed in the cause and wanted to join in to make a difference.

With that out of the way, we had the chance to stop by the Nero’s house as it was being built on Tuesday April 10th. It was amazing! There was a huge crew of volunteers and the house is really taking shape. Finially getting a chance to see the house really brought the whole thing home for us. Thanks to everyone that came, this has with out a doubt been the coolest thing we here at wellthatscool.com have ever been a part of. It goes to show when people come together, the force of change for the better is unstoppable

Photos from the Bands at The Tuscaloosa Get Up!

Posted by DSmithImages On March - 24 - 2012

Over the years, I’ve been able to photograph a great deal of live music with some of the shows being absolutely incredible.  None of the shows, though, can measure up to the impact and importance of one I photographed on March 23rd.  As part of Wellthatscool.com, I had full access to photograph the Tuscaloosa Get Up! benefit concert to help Habitat for Humanity in Tuscaloosa.  The show was held at the historic Bama Theatre in downtown Tuscaloosa, and it produced a packed house.  The three bands on the bill, Lee Bains III & The Glory FiresThe Dexateens, and The Alabama Shakes absolutely slayed the jam packed crowd.  It was a full on assault of rock and roll from three ALABAMA based bands.  Before the actual show began, the three bands performed a small acoustic set for special VIP guests.  It set the stage for what was to come.

Once the show began, Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires took the stage first and opened things off with a spirited intensity.  The band has a new album approaching and an opening gig with The Alabama Shakes on select upcoming tour dates.  As a result, they are going to continue to impress live audiences all over the country.

After The Glory Fires finished, Lee Bains didn’t get much of a rest as he took the stage with The Dexateens, who elicited a fantastic reaction from the hometown crowd.  Bassist Matt Patton, due to travel issues, couldn’t make the start of the set but arrived in the middle of it and stepped in without missing a beat.

When The Dexateens finished, The Alabama Shakes took the stage and got the entire crowd on their feet.  It’s been a crazy ride for this band as they’ve gone from playing local Tuscaloosa bars to major events and venues across the country and world.  Tuscaloosa, though, embraced them early, and they are quick to return the love.  They closed things out with another spirited set that sent the crowd home happy.

All in all, it was a magnificent night that raised over $20,000 for a very deserving family in Tuscaloosa.  I will be doing another blog post soon covering the behind the scenes activities and other events that happened at The Tuscaloosa Get Up!  Until then, though, please check out the gallery from the musical performances at http://www.dsmithimages.com/site/music/the-tuscaloosa-get-up:-3-23-12/1/

Enjoy!

Meet the Tuscaloosa Get Up family and those who helped make it happen.

Posted by chinesedentist On March - 12 - 2012

As most know, The Tuscaloosa Get Up! was started as a way to work with Tuscaloosa Habitat to build a house for a family that lost their home during the April 27th tornado.  We were not sure who that family would be, but we are pleased to announce we have met our homeowners… The Nero family from Alberta City.

Here is a run down about them from the Tuscaloosa Habitat webpage:

John and Pam Nero lived in Alberta City and were at home when the tornado ripped through Tuscaloosa on April 27th.  John had just picked Pam up from working at the Red Cross office, and they were watching the weather reports on tv with their son.  Pam heard what she thought was a train, but John knew better.   He looked outside to see a massive tornado heading right for them.   They ran into the hallway and shut all the doors.  John recalls the loud roaring and churning sound and the terrible pressure he felt in his ears.   The family was praying and holding onto each other.   A door blew open, glass was breaking and the house was shaking violently.  Bricks flew through the broken window and one hit John in the hip as he struggled to close the door.   Shortly after, the back section of their roof blew off and John was being lifted off the floor.  Pam and her son grabbed onto each of John’s legs and held on as tight as they could.  Somehow they managed to keep John from being sucked away by the wind. When the storm finally passed, the family emerged to the utter devestation and began looking for their friends and neighbors.

Pam was having abdominal pains which continued for a couple of days. Worried, John insisted that she go to the doctor. Once there, an EKG showed that she was having a heart attack and she was rushed to the hospital.   They took her straight into surgery and found four major blockages in her heart.  Pam woke up four days later to find that she had suffered a heart attck, a stroke and had just undergone open heart surgery.  This was all probably from the stress of her experience. Pam is doing great now.   The Neros are currently living in an appartment and are trying to get back on their feet.   The family has been approved to have a new home built by Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa.

When we started trying to plan this event we had no idea how much of an outpouring of support we would receive.  We would never be able to do any events if it were not for our regular sponsors, The Left Hand Soap Company, The Pink Box Burlesque, Wilhagans, Green Bar, Alcove International and Manna Grocery. We also had a wealth of local sponsors join in just for this great event.

Foreman $1000.00+

Sumersell Center for the Study of the South at the University of Alabama (Normally we don’t like studying but a whole center just for the south, we can really get behind that.)

Good People Brewing (It’s not just a witty name, these guys are in fact “Good People”.  We would even say they are some of the best and don’t even get us started on their beer.)

Contractor $500.00+

Smith & Staggs LLP (Mike, Amanda , Clay and everyone else here are on our speed dial. A great firm that can help you in your time of need)

Rollbamaroll.com (one of the hippest, smartest Bama blogs on the internet and that internet, let us tell you that thing is big.)

First Federal Bank (They came to us first with out even wanting attention of sponsoring.  First Federal, locally owned, locally awesome!)

YellowHammer Creative  (If you want some super awesome design work done these guys are for you… case in point the “Get Up” posters and shirts.)

Park Transfer (Moving a bunch of stuff or storing a bunch of stuff these guys will take good care of you.)

Jim and Nicks Bar-B-Q (If you have not been to a Jim and Nicks, you’re missing out…their Bar-B-Q will bring a tear to a glass eye.  Soon to open a downtown Tuscaloosa location!)

Scott England and Heather Mechler (No page for these guys but if you Google “most awesome couple ever” that is what you get and I think it sums them up quite well.)

The Pink Box Burlesque (If you ever meet anyone half as cool as Momma Dixie and the rest of the PBB crew, you let us know… we’ll need to meet them and take notes.)

Builder $250.00+

Brooms Cleaning (big or small Nish and her team can clean it all. )

Alcove International Tavern (The bar you can take your parents to… not to mention non smoking.  One of the best beer bars in Tuscaloosa and you know how we feel about beer.)

Egans Bar (The bar where all these bands got their start… this place is like the Mecca of rock and roll in Tuscaloosa)

Jessup, Ingram, Burns and Associates certified public accountants (Once again locally owned and locally awesome.  Ask for Garret Allen.  He does so much great work for us while also maintaining the quiet, cool accountant thing.  The quiet part is easy for most accountants, but it’s the cool part that really bumps him to the next level.)

The Left Hand Soap Company (Their soap can wash away the smell of most of our poor decisions so you know that has to be good, right?)

EL Rey Burrito Lounge (One of the finest restaurants we’ve ever been to.  Even though they are based out of Montgomery, they contacted us and wanted to help.  If you are ever in the capital city, do yourself a favor and go… trust us!)

Queen City Cycles (From the beach cruisers we prefer to the road bike that weigh 11lbs, they can sell you one or fix the one you already have.  Jason and Dan will make two wheels hit the road for you.)

Grace Aberdean Habitat Alchemy (A great source of support of the arts in general, but also one hell of a great store.  We can never go in without coming out with something that is super cool)

Cahaba Wealth Management (When and if we ever make enough wealth management, Joe will be the first to know)

Hales Tavern Preservation Society (Oh Hales we do miss you so… we are sure your gumbo saved our lives about 26.5 times and that does not even mention the great music we saw there)

Wynn and Josh Jones (A big thank you to the Jones, good dudes!)

The Wellthatscool.com Tuscaloosa Get Up Tornado Benefit

Posted by chinesedentist On January - 16 - 2012

A few days after the April 27th tornado, we called our friend Elliot McPherson of the Dexateens with the idea of trying to organize a benefit  show to help in the recovery. It was decided that any sort of concert should be put on hold and the help the city needed most at that time was definitely more hands on. So with the one year anniversary approaching, we would like to announce the “Tuscaloosa Get UP”

The Tuscaloosa Get Up will take place at the Bama Theatre in downtown Tuscaloosa on Friday March 23rd at 8pm. The event is a partnership between us, the Tuscaloosa Arts Council and Tuscaloosa’s own Dexateens. It will showcase the music of the Alabama Shakes, The Dexateens and Lee III and the Glory Fires.  The event is all ages and will be $15 for general admission with a limited amount of VIP tickets for $50. The VIP tickets will entitle attendees to early entry to a preparty at the Bama featuring light food, free local beer and limited edition poster and a short acoustic set from the some of the bands.

This event is a fundraiser for Tuscaloosa Habitat for Humanity. All proceeds from the event will go towards our goal of rebuilding a whole house for a family that lost theirs during the storm. We want to harness the power of music to help heal Tuscaloosa.

General admission and VIP tickets are available here

If you can’t make it but still want to help, you can make a tax deductible donation here.

Here is a little wellthatscool.com taste of what you have in store.

Surprise Alabama Shakes Acoustic Set in the WTC Studio

Posted by chinesedentist On November - 7 - 2011

I know we must seem like the Alabama Shakes blog for Tuscaloosa as of late, but these guys are just so good. They agreed to do a few unannounced acoustic songs for people at the world wide headquarters. It was something special. It’s also the only time I’ve seen them play in that very intimate way. We hate we could not let the word out about this but we felt our little studio could not handle the amount of people who would come. So for those that missed it, here is a little something for you. We would also like to thank Chad at the Alcove for coming up with a second guitar at the drop of the hat. Also, there is a rumor that if you watch this week’s podcast, there might be a musical surprise at the end.

The Alabama Shakes: 11/03/11

Posted by DSmithImages On November - 4 - 2011

Good beer and good music go hand and hand.  Luckily, I was able to partake in that great combination on November 3rd as The Alabama Shakes, probably the hottest band in this great state, performed at the Good People Brewery for a special event hosted by theMagic City Post and Shop Birmingham.

I know I keep saying it so I’ll be brief this time, but  The Alabama Shakes are absolutely blowing up and going big places.  The buzz this band is top notch.  As a result, it was great to see them at such a different but great venue as the Good People Brewery.  The set itself turned out to be another burning one from them as they captivated the crowd, some who had seen them before and others who hadn’t.  Like pretty much every show by them, they won over a whole new group of fans.

Before you check out the photos, please visit The Alabama Shakes at http://www.alabamashakes.com

Also be sure to visit Good People Brewing at http://www.goodpeoplebrewing.com and pick up their products wherever you might find it.

The full gallery from this event can be visited at http://www.dsmithimages.com/site/music/the-alabama-shakes-11-3-11/1/

Enjoy!
