Record Store Day at Oz

Posted by chinesedentist On April - 14 - 2011

If you love great music and supporting Tuscaloosa’s independent record store you should take some time off  from A-day and slip down to Oz music for Record Store Day on Sat. April 16th. What is Record Store Day, well glad you asked it’s;

This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on. Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April.

A Record Store Day participating store is defined as a retailer whose main primary business focuses on a physical store location, whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% located in the state of operation.  (In other words, we’re dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores—not online retailers or corporate behemoths).

Our own nugget of awesome Oz fits the last part very nicely. We asked our own music maven and Oz worker Ally Nevarez what to expect and she had this to say.

Record Store Day is right around the corner! Saturday, April 16 is the audiophile’s national holiday, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with your local Tuscaloosa record store, OZ Music. We’ll be receiving limited releases from a variety of artists. They’re going to be available on first come/first serve basis, so get there early!

In addition to the exclusive releases we’ll have at the store, we’re excited to be hosting the 2011 LadyFest DeepSouth musical guests. Starting at 2:00 PM Piss Shivers will take the stage, followed by GhettoBird, Dead Balloons, Younger Siblings, and ending at 4:30 PM with Bender.

We will also have live performances by Tuscaloosa favorites The Motions at 12:00 PM, and OZ Music’s own Joshua Morgan Folmar at 1:00 PM. We Killed the Dinosaurs will finish off the afternoon at 5:00 PM. If you haven’t seen a live show at OZ Music yet this is your chance to check out our stellar stage set-up while enjoying great bands.

Doors will open at 10:00 AM, but if you have your heart set on a limited edition 7” you should probably get there earlier. Last year customers started lining up at 8:00 AM! There will be free food, special sales, giveaways, and the musical performances are for customers of all ages. Oz Music is one of the last independent record stores in the country, and we’re excited to be putting on this kind of event for our community. See you there!

For a complete list of what Oz has to offer click here and plan accordingly. There are many RSD exclusives that are just plain awesome so go get some great music. As always Thanks to Ally and Oz music in general for being so fucking awesome.

Saban Statue made by UA Art student

Posted by chinesedentist On April - 6 - 2011

Tuscaloosa magazine has a piece up detailing the making of the Coach Nick Saban statue. It turns out that the artist was right here in Tuscaloosa the whole time. I don’t know why but we just assumed that the thing was sculpted by some far off company that had no idea of the importance of the whole thing. Jeremy Davis a senior art student at the U.A with help from Craig Wedderspoon and Daniel Livingston, professors at the art department created the statue over the past year . Even Coach Saban himself and Ms. Terry seemed very pleased with the results.  How many times have we seen Coach Saban smile like that well it’s somewhere between -42 and fucking never (even if he looks a little uncomfortable doing it). If it can make Coach Saban smile like that you know it has to be awesome. So if you see Mr. Jeremy Davis tell him good job. If  your on twitter and want to tell the statue itself you can find it here.  Big thanks to the Tuscaloosa news for having such awesome pictures and to the power brokers that be for keeping this local. Remember to get a whole gallery of 50 photos taken by the Tuscaloosa news go here and for a three minute time lapse video of the creation head here

Posted by chinesedentist On March - 25 - 2011

After checking out Ally’s opening, (sounds dirty, it’s not, but go here for details) why not head over to see one of our favorite groups of people here in the Druid City, the Pink Box Burlesque.  You don’t know who they are? Well let’s let the leader of their troupe and the object of all us cooligan’s desires, Mama Dixie, give you some back ground.

” We are Tuscaloosa’s own Burlesque Troupe, focused on traditional burlesque and pin-up culture, we have a wide variety of performers, characters and performances… song, dance, comedy, juggling, live band and the list goes on and on….2011 is our fourth season and we’re working diligently to bring you some amazing shows!”

Rock on Mama. We got a little red hot and bothered just reading that so you know the show will be all that and a bag of chips. Here is a little of what to expect. The Pink Box Burlesque’s salute to all things 1920′s – from voting to prohibition to flappers and speakeasies – the PBB Dames and Dappers are jazzed to show you their rouged knees and keen gams. Singing, Dancing, Burlesque, Comedy, Live Music, Special Guests and much, much more! How can there be much, much more? That’s pretty full evening of fucking awesome. Here are all the details:

What are we doing this weekend? Getting our Ally Nevarez on of course.

Posted by chinesedentist On March - 24 - 2011

Ally is having a MFA in the Book Arts Thesis Exhibition, titled REPRESENT. There will be posters, free books, and possibly hummus, we all know if it’s free David Smith will be there. Get there early & you’ll get the bound book that goes along with the poster portion of the show. The book features all handmade papers, letterpress replicas of mundane ephemera, and a selection of writing by Brian Oliu (I think that is the bright shirt wearing MFA dj guy from Egans). If you don’t know Ally shame on you first but let us give you some background.

  • She’s smart, I mean we had to look up what ephemera was, for those not in the know it’s “ transitory written and printed matter not intended to be retained or preserved. The word derives from the Greek, meaning things lasting no more than a day.” , Thanks Wikipedia.
  • She works at Oz music and is our music writer here at WTC. We are getting to old to know what the kids are into these days, it’s hard when you spend most of your free time shaking your fist at neighborhood kids and keeping their Frisbees.
  • She is working on pursuing two degrees – one a MFA in book arts and another in library science. I know we felt double lucky to get one and for some of us that elusive associate degree still vexes us. Yet still she has had time to be apart of the local arts community.
  • She is one of the most positive people we have had the chance to be around and has some really cool tattoos.
  • She drove through snow covered icy roads to bring Bo homemade tamales. Which ranks right up there my friend Martin bringing me a Dark Lord Saban signed box of oatmeal creme pies.
  • Her motto on her business cards ” This bitch can print” which makes Mikey’s ” this man can film” seem kinda lame.
  • She “aint never been any thing but a winner” as is evident by her trophy almost as big as she was as a child

Does that not sound like someone you want to know? Why not come by the Alabama Art Kitchen(2626 University Blvd) and see some of her beautiful work.  She had this to say in a recent inview with The Crimson and White

““They’re more ‘zine’ in that they’re about components,” she said. “Each piece has a corresponding poster and a corresponding piece of ephemera (glad we gave you defination now aren’t you), like a sticky note. As you walk through the show, you look at a poster, pick up a piece of ephemera that helps decode the poster and put the piece in your book. It gives [exhibit goers] a physical representation of their experience of walking through the exhibit….A lot of what I do involves repurposing, which involves reusing T-shirts and other things as material for making paper,” she said. “For artwork, I might reuse a linoleum block by manipulating an image, changing a color or layering, but the idea is to have it be used more than once.”

The event starts at 6pm and last till 9pm, there are free books, hummus and I have a hunch some mighty cool people what more could you ask for!

Pre-parties for Suds of The South.

Posted by chinesedentist On March - 11 - 2011

Well we decided the fest was just not enough so in honor of Suds of The South there are several events going on tonight to get everyone warmed up. The first is the Good People brewing can revel party. You know we are super stoked about this because it brings our long time beer sponsor to Wilhagans. Micheal will be there to crack a few cans and talk about the move of more and more craft breweries to cans and he has a few Good People giveaways lined up. So if you like us have been waiting forever to see and taste these good brews from the Good People brewery come out tonight. The event will be going all night but based on the limited amout of beer I’d get there early.

The Alcove will be hosting a Suds of The South tap take over. Some of the brews on tap include rarities such as Terrapin’s “Monk’s Revenge” Belgian IPA , Bell’s “Hell Hath no Furry” Belgian Strong Dark Ale (First time in Tuscaloosa), Straight to Ale’s Unobtanium Old Ale (First time in Tuscaloosa) and Blue Pants Knickerbocker Red (first time anywhere other then Huntsville). Steve form Terrapin and Tina from Bell’s will be there to talk about beer and help everyone get ready for Suds of The South.

Egans will be having $3 pints of Back Forty beers. With Tripp and Jason  there to tell you what to expect in the future.

Events like these are not all that common so get out circulate and enjoy some of the best craft beer events Tuscaloosa has ever seen. The UglyTusk.com Freakout!!!

Posted by chinesedentist On March - 9 - 2011

One of our favorite sister sites, the Ugly Tusk, is having a 50s/60s soul/psych/garage dance party (complete with costume contest) at Egans on Thursday night. Everyone knows we love a costume contest. I think we are all dressing as this guy. There will be dancing, hard drinking and according to the Ugly Tusk themselves,  ”Later in the night, the party will devolve into hipster cocaine sex jams (byoc), whatever that means to you”. It means they are doing field research for their writing later in life when they are the corduroy jacketed scholarly types teaching the youth of tomorrow.  They also wanted us to warn people that they are not responsible for any burnt genitals (whatever you do do not Google image search that)  from dancing so hard in tight britches. This should be a party you don’t want to miss. We will be there watching this beautiful mating ritual dance of the  southern bearded MFA.

The Suds of the South Beerfest has returned to Tuscaloosa!

When people think of craft beer, they often think of the Pacific Northwest, Colorado or even Delaware. One place that does not get the respect it deserves is the South. That’s why wellthatscool.com is proud to present the “Suds of The South”. This event will take place at Wilhagans in Tuscaloosa on Saturday March 12th from 4 to 7 pm. The featured breweries include Good People Brewing (Birmingham, AL), Straight to Ale (Huntsville, AL), Back Forty Beer Co. (Gadsden, AL), Terrapin Beer Co. (Athens, GA), Sweetwater Brewing Co. (Atlanta, Ga), Yazoo Brewing Co. (Nashville, TN), Highland Brewing Co. (Asheville, NC), Lazy Magnolia Brewing Co. (Kiln, MS) and Abita Beer (Abita Springs LA). This year we are pleased to announce a rotating, non-southern addition every year which we will call the “sympathizer”. This year’s “sympathizer” will be Bell’s Brewery (Galesburg MI). Each attendee will receive a 3oz keepsake glass and get to move around and try beer from all the breweries. Good People and Back Forty are planning on bring special, exclusive beers for the event. This event is a fundraiser for Free the Hops. So by attending, you not only get to try great beers but you also get to help the fight of changing Alabama’s antiquated beer laws. A limited number of early buyer tickets are on sale for $10 and $15. After those are sold out, the price will increase to $20. Get your tickets here https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/157529
