One of our favorite times of the year is Halloween. Who doesn’t like getting tipsy while dressing as their favorite video game charter or internet meme?  (why yes Matt Smith I do think those tights would really pull your Link costume together)  But we also love that it’s the time of year that we get to partner with the lovely ladies and handsome gentlemen of the PBB for The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

This year’s show is on Sat Oct 29th at the lovely Bama Theatre at 9pm. It’s not just a screening of the movie,oh no, it’s a full on stage show with  crowd participation, props,  dancing and a heaping tablespoon of innuendo with the movie as a backdrop. It would be a terrible shame to get there late. Starting at 7pm when the doors open you can watch “Haxan”, a creepy 1922 Swedish documentary about witchcraft followed by the always super rad costume contest with over $300 in prizes at 8:30. Admission is just $15 with prop bags for $5 and that is money well spent in our book. We hope to see you there!!

One of our favorite bands for years have been the D-teens and for good reason. They bring an amazing amount of energy to their live shows. We were lucky enough to be on hand and get a great amount of video. So enjoy what our own Mikey says is some of the best film he has ever been involved with. Look for a few more nuggets from both The Dexateens and The Alabama Shakes coming soon.

For those lucky enough to get in on Friday Oct 14th, you got to see a band that will no longer be playing small venues. You might have even got in but could not see the band. It was the fullest Egan’s has ever been. Well, do we have a treat for you. With Mikey on the injured reserve, our own Erin Phillips fought the throbbing masses to record a few songs that are not on their wildly popular EP . The sound is not perfect but it really captures the energy of a packed out live Alabama Shakes show. These guys, much like the Dexateens, make us proud to be from Alabama.

Friday, October 14th, 2011… another night, another jam packed show from The Alabama Shakes in Tuscaloosa.  The band came into Egans as part of the birthday celebration for Tuscaloosa counter-cultural ambassador Bo Hicks, and they did not disappoint.  They put on another sizzling show in front of a ridiculously large crowd, especially for a confined space like Egans.

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again.  The band has so much “it” when they perform.  All the buzz they are generating isn’t out of line or an overreaction.  The way they carry themselves during a show and hook the crowd is something special.  You can’t really teach it, and the bands that have that ability are the ones that do rise to the top.  If you get a chance to watch them, do it.  I think everyone in the bar realized they probably won’t be playing many more free shows in the near future as they progress into bigger venues and different markets.  Still, it has been great to watch them grow a fan base locally in Tuscaloosa.
